I am having similar problems with my 98 s70. basically, I have replaced the starter 3 times now and getting a bit frustrated.
original - Started fine but squealed because the gear in the starter kept trying to bush back, causing the end of the gear to be worn (just the tip, gears were not meshing)
1st replacement - From the junkyard, tested fine, and worked fine. Only for two starts though.
2nd replacement - Brand new (not bosch, but it does have a 2 year warrenty). Again, started fine, but only for about 3 or 4 starts.
3rd replacement - Brand new (under warrenty). Starts fine, but a wild noise exists. Sounds like the starter is not disengaging at all, like the gears are still meashed together. (Once the starter starts the car, then the car the drives the starter)
I am confused since its not always the same issue. Here is a link to another thread on volvoforums.com

Tech is helping a lot, but I could use some more opinions/expirence as well. Any suggestions of what to check? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.
97 S70 starter won't disengage.

This was attached to a similar thread in the RWD section so I have split it and put it into the FWD section for a greater chance of help.
