Been a long time! MIJ and Crew. I have an overheating problem. Thermostat housing is warm but the hose connected takes a long time to heat up. It starts to heat up after the car is overheating. I'm coding for a coolant Temp sensor 116. I'm also getting a coolant hiss around the turbo. What's the chances that my thermostat is bad. One last problem I just rounded out the grooves in the housing screws..any suggestions on getting them out?
Thanks in Advance

It sounds like the thermostat to me, replace the ECT sensor while you are there. Volvo has replacement steel bolts for the housing.
Many have used a Dremel Tool to cut a screwdriver slot in the head of the bolt or to just cut the head off.

Added on problem. While attempting to remove stripped torx bolts on thermostat housing, I cracked the thermostat housing that attaches to the head. What exactly do I need to remove to get access to remove and replace this part of the housing instead of removing the head?
thanks

You're going to have to replace the housing now...buy a gasket with it and 2 bolts on the top and same bolts (3 of them) to attach the housing. In your case now, http://www.eeuroparts.com is your friend. A local 850 owner just did exactly what you did with his housing and bolts just last week...Eeuroparts got him all needed parts in 2 days and it took him 30 mins. to do the entire R&R after he got the right (good quality) tools to do the job. Btw, your power steering pump is going to have to come out of the way to extract the thermostat housing bolts.
If you can access, Volvospeed that's fine, but if not, you'll have to join to see his thread there on his issues (same as yours) and his solutions (with pictures of the process, tools he used, etc.): http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.ph ... pic=109612

After replacing the broken thermostat housing and replacing the T-stat and new torx 40 screws for top and bottom housing. The overheating problem is fixed. The Waller t-stat did not open in boiling water and the new t-stat did. This was my simple problem that turned into a nightmare. The bottom housing is a bear to remove. I found a long torx 40 screw driver at Northern Tools for $3.69. I put them in a set of vise grips to install that bottom hard to get torx screw on the bottom housing. I change the serpentine belt and forgot the routing. Thanks MIJ for the PDF file picture, it saved the day except for not having a tool to relieve the tensioner. The quarters will only work once each set. I ruined $1.50 worth of quarters and it still did not work. What I did was remove the ECU box which gave me room to insert a 14 mm open end wrench into the tensioner hole. I then clamped on a pair of vise grips and used a cheater bar to pull the tensioner to relieve the belt tension. It worked and I was able to finish this job. Parts took 3 days to get to me from Eeuro.
Thanks Lee and MIJ
