96 850 turbo wagon, hard to start after fill up

Car is hard to start after a fill up with the engine shutdown. I can start it by kicking the throttle a little, then it coughs, idles rough for a couple seconds then runs fine. If I fill up with the engine idling it will keep running unless I fill up too much (after the auto shutoff) then it will hesitate and stall. Changed the gas cap with no change, however its not a Volvo cap, the old one looks okay anyway. Car runs great, 27 mpg at 72 mph on long trips, but I am throwing a P0172 code. Thanks guys.

Someone posted recently about the exact same symptoms as yours- ended up being a pick-up line in the fuel pump... with gas low- no problem, but with gas high, it had a hard time sucking up the gas. If I find the thread I'll post back.

That was my post from a week ago. Look in the repair database for how to remove the fuel pump. On the second page is a reply with pictures that explins the hose problem

I had similar problems on my '94 when I first bought it and tried to round the fuel purchase up to the next "round amount". Since then I just let the pump go until it clicks and call it good and I have not had the problem since. Full disclosure, I was also having issues with a poor choice in plug wires and a poor choice of spark plugs at the same time so it is less than definitive.

My hypothesis is that I overfill and flood the charcoal cannister with raw fuel rather than fumes.

I'll have to say that Lee's theory is preferrable to any maintenance. I'll try not gorging the tank first. I suspect that may be the case; I currently drive about 1200 miles round trip from South Florida to the Florida Panhandle about every 8 days, and try to get as much gas in as possible. But I guess the extra .5 gallon would really only get me about another 15 miles. I'll report back at next couple fill ups. Thanks everyone.

I've filled up a couple times since this post. Ive been letting the filler stop when it senses full, still tough to start after fill up , but doesnt seem to be as bad. I read something from someone that hinted the problem may be a purge valve. Any thoughts?
