A friend of mine's father is offering me his car. It is a 1993 850 GLT with transmission problems (no surprise there). This is what he is telling me: the fluid is black and it won't go into anygear. It sounds like the PNP, but I'm concern with the black fluid. The car is really really nice with a perfectly kept interior. Should I jump on it, or do you guys think I'm gonna need a rebuilt transmission? If I do need a rebuilt unit, do you guys know of any sources?
thank you
tranny Topic is solved

it's not a bad pnp switch.if the pnp was bad the car will still go in gear. it sound like you have bad tranmission. if th $ is right jump on it.

I was under the impression that if the PNP went bad, the tranny wouldn't know it's in gear. What would happen if I disconnected the PNP plug on a working tranny?
Also, Is the tranny from a 1995 850 Turbo be the same? My friend's turbo "ran" into a tree. The car was totaled by the insurance company, but get this...it still runs fine. I was thinking maybe I can take the tranny out before it's picked up. My only concern is whether or not it's the same.

the pnp switch is for start up in P-N and back-up. it sounds like you need a new transmission. the turbo and non-turbo are different. if you are trying to change the transmission yourself you need special tools to hold the motor up.
