You can call Volvo to see if they will still honor the warranty a couple of weeks late. If you have any documentation of any issue possibly related to what an problematic ETM will do, this would help. Otherwise, there's a company now making a non-contacting ETM you could try out. There's a thread about it in the general section.

When you found it and when it failed are not the same thing. If you can show that the ETM was failing before it was diagnosed you will have a better chance, but technically they probably don't have to fix it.

Above all be polite and nice. They will not be unaware of the irony of it failing just days after the warranty. A morning appointment and a bribe of a dozen donuts would not hurt. Get the service manager on your side. This could go either way.

Volvo is VERy hard nosed on the ETM deal
If it's past the 10 yr, 200K warranty extension I can guarantee that you're SOL.
Every ETM has to show a code, THEN be authorized by Volvo NA.
They will not do it. It's not up to your dealer, each and every ETM must have that authorization before replacement can be installed.

I agree with JRL, but they may be willing to split the cost with you (still could be very high) just to be nice and try to keep your loyalty.

What do you guys think about sending my ETM to Don Wilson to have it rebuilt? Do you know anyone else that has done this?
My thinking is kinda like JRL's too. Volvo wants $100 just to hook it up to the machine. That's not counting lost work, gas, etc. The nearest Volvo dealer is 40 miles away. I figure i'd already have a 3rd of the rebuild cost in letting the Volvo dealer finger-f my car.

thanks for your opinions

Don doesn't rebuild them- only the company that he tested it for...so check out the thread and contact these guys...see what they can do for you...I know they're saying $600 bucks....but.....
