service reminder light on dash

Thanks for the help with the check engine light. Is there a way I can get the service light off as well without taking it to the dealer? 95 volvo 850 wagon. also are console lights hard to change. I have no trasnmission shift indicator lights.

I recently performed this resetting myself. Very useful information. Anyways, the flyhead is the little piece connected to the cover by a wire. It has an off-white head, and if you take it out of the cover it has a metal tip. Just plug it into socket number 7, and follow through with the steps. I couldn't get it to work the first few times, and I figured out that the last time you press the button you have to hold it down for a second or two before the LED lights will come back on in a flashing manner.

Volvo dealers want $16.50 to reset the service light. They say that the OBD II port will not be helpful and that a Volvo supplied device costing about $1,000 is required. It would be like paying for an oil change twice or paying an extra $25 per oil change for 100,000 miles up front. There are answers for older and newer models but I have heard of none for the 96 850. Any help out there?

Find a tool using that link. Usually they're about $100-200. My OBDII kit runs as software on my PC laptop, but is very hard to use, and I wouldn't recommend it.

*Some reset the service light and some don't. Make sure the one you buy does.*

`95 and down, the codes can be read from the ECM. `96 and up are
OBD II. For these a code reader will pull fault codes and turn off the check engine light. I got one like ipd sells except I only paid about $140. It won't turn off the service light.

ipd sells a Service Light Reset Tool for $178. Not worth it to me. If you ever have to change dash light bulbs you can just pull the bulb for the service light. It won't hurt anything. Just make sure you have the right bulb.

I like the bulb idea, specially if you service our own car one would assume that you don't need an "idiot light" to remind you to change the oil!

Yes, there were a few years starting with `96 that Volvo got the hot idea that they would not make a way for the owner to turn off the service light. It was so unpopular that they restored the capability on subsequent years.
