s90 1998 stalling sometimes at stop light

Post by steelfish »

Well ive had this car since the 2nd of January of 09 and love it. the engine was rebuilt about 50k ago and the tranny just 7k ago it has 180k overall. since day one it started to stall at stop lights. it didnt do it all the time. so ive cleaned the throttle body and the maf but its still doing it although not as bad. any ideas? some said the fuel pump in the tank some said electrical.

How does it idle? Does it only stall when coming to the stop?

If so, that might suggest the converter lock up is not releasing. Place gear selector in 3rd and see if it repeats. Though the trans could go into lock up in just about any gear, for it to go into lock up in the lower gears it is usually oil temperature triggered.

If it is not idling smoothly and driving has no bearing on the stall, you may have a vacuum leak, an intake manifold leak, a bad MAF, or a dirtly faulty idle speed motor.

When the ignition is first turned on, does the MIL light up on the dash. You might also check for stored codes, not all will trigger the MIL light on the dash.

Thanks Dan for your response. the car runs great even at the stop lights at idle. only sometimes does it stall when stopped. no lights come on that i can tell i.e. mil. runs smooth the rest of time and gets 24 mpg on freeway. again thanks again. alan

I was inquiring if you knew if the MIL light even functions.
When the ignition is turned on, engine not running, all of the warning lights illuminate, does the MIL light up at that time, it should if it doesn't the bulb has been removed or has burned out? Also then you would not know if there were codes.

Does it stall after the stop or as the car is coming to a stop?

It could be your idle speed valve, they can get dirty and function somewhat sluggishly.

MIL is the check engine light, one of the yellow ones that is supposed to light up once the ignition switch is turned on but goes out once the engine starts. MAF is the air mass meter.
