850 hood latch not locking

Post by Stevieb »

The hood latch on the passenger side of my 94 850 will not lock. When the hood closes, it can be pushed down or up freely. Also, there isn't any tension on the cable connecting the two latches, not sure how relevant that is. How would I go about replacing the passenger latch? There are plenty available via e-bay.

I would say that it's not snapping down when you close the hood- thus no tension on the wire. Get one and you'll see how it goes in...these aren't very difficult to replace.

Make sure the lever in the car is pushed back in.It should spring back in by itself but I had that problem after pulling the lever it didn't go back all the way so I manually pushed it back and then the hood locks caught

Thanks for the replies guys, I did fiddle with both the latch and the release inside the car, but no progress. I will go ahead and order one, I see that it seems to be just a couple of bolts holding it in, but how is the cable disconnected?

I would next try a phillips screwdriver held perpendicular to the lock mechanism and press it in and see if the lock engages over the round metal part of the phillips screwdriver. If if locks, pull the release and see if it unlocks. Try it a couple times. You may just need to align the U bracket on the hood. Just bend it a little to make sure it is fitting in the middle of the lock. Spray white lithium grease in the mechanism also.

To get the cable out of the latch, pry the ball on the end of the metal cable sideways to free it from the latch arm, then pull the cable sheath (the outside of the cable) out of the other side of the latch (the direction toward the driver's side of the car). You might be able to pry the ball sideways with fingers, or if not a pair of needlenose pliers will do it. I also recommend trying to see if the latch will close on a screwdriver pushed down into it, before giving up on the latch. These latches are very sensitive to adjustment up and down.

Thanks for all the replies. I have tried pushing it into place with a screwdriver but it just pops back open. I think I'll have to go ahead with the replacement, it isn't an expensive part anyways. Thanks again.
