This question came up in another thread so I decided to start a new thread about it. Most places will take your motor oil. How about your transmission fluid or your coolant (radiator fluid)? Any other fluids that you have stored up that you need to get rid of. Please post your experiences as to where you get rid of this stuff.
This was the first in a response to Lee concerning where to take antifreeze from another thread:
you'll have to call your city's waste control and see where you can take it. I have many gallon jugs full myself I need to get rid of. Btw, I had the same experience as you at AutoZone with transmission fluid. I finally mixed it with old oil and dropped it off without telling them. I just didn't understand them not taking ATF- after all, it is a type of oil and can be recycled too.

Where I live (Orange County, FL), I can take it down to the landfill and drop it off as "household hazardous waste"--they take it, tag it, and dispose of it properly. They take motor oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, gear lube...all the fluids your car needs to workMadeInJapan wrote:This question came up in another thread so I decided to start a new thread about it. I recycle my used transmission fluid and motor oil without the middle man.
I filter them and pour them directly into the fuel tank of my 84 F-250. It has an International Harvester 6.9l Indirect injection diesel. It will pretty much burn anything that will fit into the fuel tank.

For UK members most local authority "Household Waste Disposal" sites will take all oils, antifreeze and batteries. Those that don't have the facilities for disposal should be able to give directions to the nearest site that does.

Whoa, interesting. Does it kill the cat. converter? Do diesels have a cat?Sailing_Faith wrote:I recycle my used transmission fluid and motor oil without the middle man.

Embarrassed I don't know the answer to that. But hey, I'm American. Only trucks are diesel.

There is a new move a foot here in Ontario, Canada, to re-cycle all sorts of things. Old paint and batteries and other hazardous materials,(too keep them out of the landfills) which will be returned to the original retailer. For paint the idea is to charge the buyer a couple of cents more per gallon drum at the retail level and then when the balance or empty is returned, there would be no further charges incurred.
....So back to the original question... Canadian Tire accepts fluids, it appears that a "charge " may be levied at the discretion of the individual "receiving" the said fluids.
I believe some of the "quicky" lube shops will also accept fluids.

Our local waste/recycling center has several Household Hazardous Waste days each year, and I usually end up bringing my spent fluids other than oil there. It's a bit of a pain, because I have to be available on that specific day - and at one point I'd collected many many containers of various fluids and my partner was not very happy.
Sometimes I also bring them with me when I go to Watkins Glen for track days, as they have large receptacles for all sorts of automotive fluids.
