1990 740 GL Shift Assist Switch Stuck
1990 740 GL Shift Assist Switch Stuck
The "shift assist" switch on my gear shift, is stuck thus keeping my car in a high gear. The "arrow-light" in my dash remains on and I have been trying to keep my car under 60, avoiding going higher than 3200 rpms, which is almost impossible. Seems to pick when it wishes to kick down but usually stays put. Can I disconnect this extra/option/accessory? It has been a nightmare.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
I am a little confused as the "shift assist" light on the dash is for manual transmission but you also mention "kick down" which is automatic transmission.
That light on auto boxes indicates that 4th gear is disengaged which would keep your revs high but not in a higher gear. In fact it would be 3rd gear that is being used indicating a problem with the overdrive.
The switch may be the problem and it can be replaced. However, more likely is a problem with the overdrive relay, overdrive solenoid or the wiring between the relay and the solenoid.
Two links to lead you to more information on this very common problem:
