overflow bottle and over heating problems? help

Post by blind249 »

ok its got me completley stumped!

i just brought a 1998 s80 t6 and it keeps running out of coolant.

I fixed the leek in the heater core thinking that was the problem, but it wasent and now it just keeps pushing all the water into the overflow bottle then out the over flow hose onto the road? i have no idea why?

the temp isnt going over half way so its not overheating, but it keeps saying check coolant and when i do its empty?

any help would be awsome :)

cheers

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

When you replaced the heater core you would drain or partially drain the cooling system. When you refilled the system did you ensure that all of the air was expelled?

The heater control should have been on Max heat, the coolant added very slowly and the radiator hoses should have been massaged from time to time to get rid of air.

If you're bleeding out on the road, then you have a bad hose. Determine which hose and replace it.

Then I would imagine your thermostat is bad. While you're in to change it, it's best to also change out the engine temp. sensor which resides at the base of the thermostat housing.

You can also try changing out the reservoir cap. It contains the relief valve for the system, which sometimes goes bad. Stant makes a replacement which is available at most auto parts chain stores.
