1990 740 GL...love her but she has a few issues :)

Post by VolvoQueen »

Hello! I am very new to Volvo cars...but I sure do love mine. It's a 1990 740 GL. I am looking for advice as I just had $800 worth of repairs done on the 15 yr old girl...and she still has some issues.

Well briefly the car had new mounts put on due to some annoying vibration that was worse when you stopped at a light in drive. (In park it never vibrated nearly as bad.) This Volvo specialist I went to found the real problem and now the car runs very well (almost no vibration) but it still bumps around...what I mean is the engine is still shaky. Is this just normal for a 15 yr. old 740 or could it be something like spark plugs? The reason I ask is because recently my dad did a tune-up on the car for me, new wires, d. cap, and plugs. He used these new platinum or possibly titanium plugs. Does anybody know if these newer more durable plugs are actually bad for these cars in some way or another? Or would that have nothing to do with it?

Also this car has the Regina Rex fuel system which I hear is not the greatest. Still, even though the mechanic says the fuel pump seems fine...could the rough idle on the engine be due to the fuel pump or some other aspect of the fuel system? (Is it worth gettting one of those fuel cleaning jobs?)

If I sound naive forgive me, but I am not an expert by any means
and I am looking for advice. Maybe someone else has or has had a 740 GL with similar problems. Other then what I mentioned, this car has only had one other problem with occassional stumbling and stalling...though after the work was done it has yet to stall. The car had a new relay put in and I beleive something called a crank position shaft or something of that name.

ANY advice is appreciated. Also I use Castrol GTX high mileage oil. I wonder if these oils can maybe effect the car's performance in any way. The trans is in serious need of changing would dirty trans fluid cause this problem?

Thanks for tolerating all the questions. I thank anyone in advance for their help! Despite this I still love that car. I think I am going to be driving Volvos from now on ^_^

~Ami~
