2004 V70, Fuel Filter & Thermostat Question

Post by otis44 »

2004 Volvo V70, 2.4l n/a auto transmission. I have two questions hopefully someone can help me with. Where is the fuel filter located on this car? I have the car in the shop for a tb replacement among other things, and while the guy is a competent mechanic, he does not specialize in Volvo's. He can't find the filter, I looked under the car today while on the lift and I didn't see it either. Over on Volvospeed there was a writeup about it being on the passenger side, just in front of the rear axle. The mechanic said he had removed some of the protective plastic shielding underneath the car and still didn't see it. Any advice?

The second question I have is about the thermostat. As preventative maintenance I thought I would have the t-stat changed as well. The t-stat I received from FCP Groton was considerably larger in diameter and overall length than the one removed from the car. I went down to a local parts house who said they had one for this model and it was every bit as large as the one from FCP. Any advice here?

Thanks in advance

Wow...seems that Volvo did a few things here that were unusual (and different for different trim levels). I have the same model year V70 but in the 2.5T trim and the fuel filter is exactly where your mechanic looked (under the plastic trim). I'm not sure about the thermostat- If I find anything for you, I'll post back.

Thanks for the reply, I read earlier today (after posting this) over on the brickboard that there may be as many as 3 possible locations for the filter. One as mentioned, one above the rear differential, and one only accessed through the trunk by removing floor panels. I suppose we'll check the other two tommorrow and post the results.

I'm stumped on the t-stat. FCP Groton I assumed would be fairly dead on, in regards to parts for this car, O'reilly auto parts here locally listed the same part # for 99-07 model years, which was too large, and Swedish Engineering listed the same part # for the above year cars as well. Although, it was impossible to tell from the picure whether it was the correct one or not. I need to break down and call either Quantrell in Lexington or Clayton in K-Ville and see what they say. Tasca Volvo's online parts menu only shows buying the whole housing with the t-stat in place as an option. It could be that one has to purchase the whole kit -n-kaboodle to receive the proper thermostat, btu at this point I don't know.

Thanks again

You might also try calling Don or Jamie at Darrel Waltrip Volvo in Franklin, TN. (google them) They give great discounts if you mention you're on the Volvo forums. They might be able to help you with location and part purchases. Good luck and let us know how things go.

Found out today the fuel filter is located in the tank on this model, the recommended replacement is 105k, per Volvo. Still no definitive answer on the thermostat.

What was the P/N of the thermostat? I'm showing three of them for a naturally aspirated '04 V70...it seems that there was a change in engine numbers, but it should've happened before the '04 MY. Is your V70 USA/CDN market or EUR?

Going into the gas tank to change the fuel filter at 105K miles is expensive. I think I'll wait until the fuel pump packs it in, before I  change it.

The thermostat I received from FCP was a Calorstat Vernet, p/n 271417. I didn't ask the dealer today about the thermostat when I talked to them about the fuel filter, I was in a rush. Tasca Volvo's part menu only shows one thermostat for this model, but does not list a part #. The car I assume is a US model, according to the information I have, it was manufactured in Belgium then shipped to Virginia Beach as new.

In regards to the fuel filter, apparently if you have a plastic fuel tank, you have an external filter, an aluminum tank (or whatever type of metal it is) = an internal filter.

That's odd, I'm showing a completely different part number for your car: 30650022 is the correct part for the thermostat on a 2004 N/A V70. Though, bad news: it's a kit, it appears the thermostat isn't a separate part anymore. I can verify that 271417 is too large and only for engines through 2002 model year.

Thanks for taking your time on this matter. Tasca shows an individual thermostat for this model, but list no part number. The corresponding price is cheap enough, I am sure it is the thermostat only, but without talking to them I'd be afraid to order. Other sites I have visited seem to confirm what you are saying about buying the entire housing just to replace the thermostat. Thanks again
