Recently my wife's 1995 850 GLT has some issues. Not wanting to start, and a bit sluggish. Mechanic said oil cap was bad/re-installed improperly. There was oil everywhere. Mechanic replaced distributor cap and button and replaced oil cap, and quote "cleaned it thoroughly"... Two days after return, same issues again along with erratic idling. I took and cleaned Mass Air Flow sensor. Throttle Body and all parts of air box, along with a fuel system cleaning product. Gave vehicle a few days to let fuel treatment do it's thing... still trouble starting... Today, I changed the oil, replaced the plugs, which had FILTHY housings full of oil and burnt up 5 month old plugs, and removed the throttle body and cleaned again. Also replace the thermostat and flushed and refilled the cooling system. Although purring like a kitten on the road, still having trouble getting it to start and the temperature gauge still hops right to the middle...Update this morning my wife calls and said car won't start after dropping kids @ daycare... she waits 20 minutes and nothing.... as soon as her ride to work shows up the car fires right up. After work, I go get car and it starts immediately, but today it idles @ 1600 rpms and is slow to respond to throttle..... I get out on the road and she runs perfectly....... I picked up a camshaft position sensor as a previous post suggested.... no change. I checked and getting good spark from ignition coil and removed a plug and it is firing properly. I shot starting fluid directly into throttle body and car would still not start up. Also, listened and can hear fuel pump running. Suggestions? Please?
NOW I HAVE CODES:
1)4-3-6-Rear O2 Compensation
2)1-2-1 - Is this MASS Air Flow or Manifold Absolute Pressure? I have seen it answered as both
3)1-2-3- ECT Signal_coolant temperature sensor
i think that the coolant temperature sensor sounds like it may be the problem>>>> would this explain all of my issues?

I agree....the ECT. While you're in there, go ahead and change the inexpensive thermostat as preventative maintenance. Have you changed out your fuel filter?

yes, I changed the thermostat and flushed and refilled the antifreeze.... It's a shame that I didn't get it while I had the thermostat off, those bolts were a bugger! What about the code 1-2-1 - Is this MASS Air Flow or Manifold Absolute Pressure? I have seen it answered as both??? Plan on cleaning the pvc as well..... This is the first time this thing has hiccuped and she has 127,000.... thanks to everyone on the advice... even a computer nerd can learn to repair their own car...

Your code is a MAF (mass air-flow) sensor code. You'll most likel need to replace it (they all go in our cars eventually), although you could try cleaning it with MAF sensor cleaner and see if this works. Just spray the sensor liberally in the air intake and let it dry...don't touch the sensor or you'll ruin it for sure.

have yet to check it, had planned on replacing all of my o2 sensors and MAF in the next week or two. Is it normal for my service light to come on upon start, and then go away after about 2 minutes?
