a big tire sigh

Post by Volvo s60 24t »

I haven’t really liked the tires on my car since I got it. I don’t typically like those "v" tread types and that’s what I've got. They also are miserable in the snow. They are Goodyear Assurance TripleTred's. I'd stay away from them if I were you.

My 850 was AWESOME In the snow, slush, rain, ice, dry pavement, etc. Many times I even took IT instead of my 4x4 truck out in a storm. It would just go anywhere. I even pulled 18 wheelers out of snow banks. Ok, that last one was a lie. I kinda thought that the s60 would be comparable. Is that really not the case?

Anyway, it’s New England and I hit a pot hole, or something, and took a gouge out of a tire. Ironically the place I go for tires said it’s no big deal. The thing they did point out was that I have more wear around the edges than the centers and that there is a degree of separation in the side walls where the tire manufacturer put its oval for their logo or something. Long story short, I should "think about" 4 new tires...

The tire guy says that because of the size of the tire and kind of car it’s limited because there isn’t a good balance because they are also meant to be performance or something like that and there aren’t any all season tires that will do too great in the snow. Anyone have info to the contrary?

He recommended the Bridgestone Potenza g019 grids. I'm just wondering if anyone with the fwd model (like mine) has had any experience with this particular tire? I’ve done some research on tire rack and they seem ok but I’m having reservations for some reason. I'll say my driving is "spirited". Also would like to hear about other tires that people really like on their cars who drive like me that also do well in the snow!

Most people like the triple treads but I have no experience with them
It would help to know if you're running 16's or 17's?
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Look over on the tirerack (www.tirerack.com) and see what tires fit and what have good ratings as well as customer comments. I did this and ended up with General Tires: Altimax... I've had them for about 5000 miles now and no issue...even in the slight snow we had here about 3 weeks ago. Don't know how they would do in more than a few inches though. They were not expensive and had great ratings for an all season tire.
