2002 s60 t5 Transmission fluid brown?

Post by jayhev »

My 2002 Volvo s60 t5 56,000 miles transmission fluid is brown. Is this normal? Is the drain and fill method doable without the software upgrade? Or am I going to have problems? All help always appreciated!

A little early at your miles to be brown, but if you're not the first owner, you don't know how the previous owner drove it. Yes, you can do the flush (which I highly recommend you do now) without a software upgrade. Just make sure you use the correct JWS-3309 compliant fluid- you can search our site and find the same fluid repackaged by Toyota and Mobil as what the dealer sells for a ridiculous price. I will say that there is a software procedure that adds a "count" to the flush number to your ECU- apparently the dealer wants to keep track of the number of times your transmission was flushed for warranty reasons- it's not necessary. If you feel you must, you can take your S60 to them after you flush it and pay to have this done. I've flushed my V70 and have never done it.

A Volvo tech once told me to disconnect the battery after the flush. The ECM is adaptive and needs to relearn how to shift because the new fluid is more slippery. The old fluid has particles in it and is more abrasive. I don't know if it is true or not but it seems reasonable.

It certainly couldn't hurt...if you do this, make sure your key is in the ignition and turned to position II (right before the cranking position) when you reattach the battery cable.
