Heater/ Blower Fan won't shut off.

Post by SilverSleeper »

This is my first post to this board, seems the way it usually goes for me when joining a car discussion board, I lurk until I have a problem that I can't fix and then I ask for help.
I bought my first Vovlo about 5 months ago, a 1994 850 Turbo (silver, black interior). Great car, one of the best I have owned.

Now for the trouble at hand. It started with a squeaky fan (caused by water getting into the housing, which I figured out where the water was coming from and fixed). Then one day I came home from work, shut off the car and the heater/blower fan came back on after the car was turned off. If I turned the key back on it would respond to the fan controls. I pulled the fuse for the night not knowing what the issue was. The next morning it was back to acting normal.

Then I decided to tackle the squeaky fan. I pulled the blower motor out, put some gear oil here and there and spun it by hand to see that the squeak was gone. Reinstalled the blower fan and once I reconnected the power it came on, at full speed, and does not respond to the key being in the ignition or not. I have to pull the fuse if I don't want it on. On the up side the fan doesn't squeak, on the down side it goes like a bat out of hell all of the time. Any advice? (sorry if this is a double post, I hit submit when i wasn't logged in)

I looked in a wiring diagram and there is a relay that controls heater fan MAX. I would check it and find a new one. I do not know where it is, there is the fuse box with relays under the hood in the drivers rear of the engine compartment and there is one under it in the driver

Where is the resistor pack located? I have read else where that this could be the issue, however all that I have read states it is in the glove box area. Any more clues to where exactly I should look once I get the glove box out?

Also I found the relays in the engine compartment, I read that the J relays were the ones that control the the fan speeds I pulled all of them while the fan was running and nothing happened.

In looking at the manual it did not say where the relay is, but it did show a picture of the resistor pack. It is behind the glove box just low and to the left of the fan; it says that you need remove the glove box and the glove box door. Also in the picture in the manual, I see what I believe to be relays. One of these could be the relay. The wiring diagram shows that the relay is feed by a Red, White, Green/Red, and Black wires. The Red is feed from the fuse box. The White is from the fan switch, #4 positions. The Green/Red Runs the fan. And finally the Black is to ground, for the relay. I hope that this helps.

Good Luck, Da

No luck yet. I find it so strange that there would be power being sent to the fan when the key is off, that's not generally how a relay or a resistor would act if it fails.
Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to always be power running to the fan? Maybe there is something internally that the fan is supposed to do and I just need to buy a new fan? Also when I turn the key I get the flashing A/C and Rec lights, indicating there is a fault in the ECC. I really don't want to take this to the dealer, but if I don't solve it soon I am going to have to.. :?

Did you check your codes? It's probably storing one or more for that ECC fault.

When I looked at the wiring diagram there was a power lead that feed from the fuse box to the relay in question. It labels it as

I have pulled all three of the J relays located in the engine compartment while the fan is running and none of them stopped it. Last night I found the resistor pack and pulled the relay that is on it or at least a relay that is in the area and it did not affect the fan. I am running out of relays to pull or "tap".
I have not checked for fault codes since I don't have the right tool to do that. I will search the board for more info on pulling codes though

Thanks for your help Moose.

Have you found the relay center in the drivers foot well? It took some looking for me to find it when I was tracking down a problem with my 95

Thanks for the reminder. I did pull the kick panel off and saw that up high and to the left there were some relays, are these the ones you are referring to? I will take a look again tonight and see if pulling any of those works.
