I am about to replace one of the u-joints on the driveshaft - the one closest to the differential.
I noticed that the u-joint that I bought at NAPA has a grease fitting. I'm surprised these don't come pre-greased.
How much grease should I use, and what kind?
This is my first u-joint R&R. The driveshaft is out, and I have removed the snaprings. Unfortunately, my vise is not big enough to press the cross out the yokes. I guess tomorrow I will go to Autozone to see if they have a tool I can borrow...
Thanks everyone.

Are you sure you have been given the correct part? I can't remember seeing a grease nipple on a Volvo drive shaft. It is possible that the grease nipple is there for subsequent services although I can find no reference to regular greasing of the spiders in any of the service books.
I don't think you will find a special tool as all the books say to drive the spider in one direction to make the bearing cap protrude from the yoke. Then repeat the process in the opposite direction and the spider can be removed. Now drift the bearing caps out of the yoke.
Bill.

This was really a pretty easy job - with the right tool.
The most difficult part was lying on my back in the driveway removing, and then reinstalling the driveshaft.
I borrowed a ball-joint press from Autozone because my bench vise was just not big enough. Getting the old cross out, and putting the new one in is no big deal. Well, removing the old snap rings was a pain, but you have to expect that.
The new u-joint from Napa was made by GMB of Japan.
There was a hole in the side of the cross for the included zerk. It was already packed with grease, so I just inserted the zerk to keep dirt out, and called it a day.
The old u-joint was a total disaster. The inside of one of the cups was totally destroyed, and the needle bearings were little more than a pile of rusty dust.
If anyone has any questions about doing this just ask here, or PM me. I took photos, but I just don't have time to upload now.
