Fuel Pump Replacement

Post by tommy33 »

Thought I'd better start a new thread here.

Shopping for the fuel pump to solve my hard start problem.
What should I purchase and from whom?

I see fuel pumps for $95. Pumps with screens for $165. Kits with the housing for $400.

I've replaced fuel pumps before and usually its a simple remove and replace. This loks like if I just by the electric pump I am going to have to install it in the old housing and use other old parts.

I appreciate your opinions and help!

Most folks use the Walbro replacement kits. The kits come with a new filter sock and all of the other parts required to retrofit it into the OEM housing. They used to have the kits on eBay all the time but They got replaced with some Chinese knock off.

A guy over on VolvoSpeed sells the kits. If you PM JHEIII874T5M over there he can get you a price.

I got my Walbro pump ($65 shipped) from
http://www.europartsdirect.com
btw this link might help to install
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.ph ... opic=30882

PS: You do need to install the spring coming off the old pump in order to secure the new pump. The guy from VS did not reinstall.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have two Walbro questions...
1.Confused_al, did you(or others who have used it) find it any noisier than the OEM pump?
2.Does anyone know if the foam sleeve in the kit is used for noise reduction or just to aid in fitting into the housing. I have an oddball pump/housing and don't think the sleeve will fit, so may have to leave it out.

Yes, it is lauder especially from outside (pass. side). But my car is a lot happier at high demand situation such as passing at 70+mph.

A little more for fitting I think.

Haven't had a chance yet to do my fuel filter and pump but over the last week I did the turn the key on and off 4-5 times technique before attempting to start the car and every time without fail the car started on the first crank. A couple of times when I forgot to do it the engine cranked over five seconds without starting. Then I would turn the key on and off 4-5 times and it would start.

Does this confirm that it is a fuel pump problem or is it the fuel pressure regulator-or something else?

Thanks again for all of your opinions and input.

It sounds more like a fuel pump relay problem to me. The fuel pumps tend to work perfectly right up to the point where they completely fail. I just posted this but here it is for you.

Try jumpering the fuel pump relay and see how it behaves. The relays start to get intermittent when they begin to fail. To jumper the relay out of the system remove relay 103 from under the fuse box cover. On the bottom of relay 103, molded into the plastic next to the terminals, are numbers 31, 31b, 15, and 87. Put the jumper wire between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87.

If it starts and runs OK with the jumper wire in place either repair or replace the relay. Here is how to repair it.

I replaced the relay about 16 months ago but I never checked the old one. And I kept the old one.

I'll jump the relay and if it cures the problem I'll try my old relay. If the problem returns I'll repair or buy a new relay.

Thanks Ozark Lee.
