I have a 2000 V70. 118,000 miles. When driving, there is a mild smell of either anti-freeze burning or exhaust in the cabin. I started the car today in my garage (door open, of course) and let it run about 30 minutes. There was no noticeable smell. I took it for a drive and the smell returned in the first 1/2 mile. Is there anything related to the catalytic converter that could be going out? I cannot find any coolant leaks. There are no drops or puddles on the garage floor. My wife says it is making her sick. No recent maintenace. Battery was replaced 12/26/2004. Timing belt and water pump were replaced 10/2004. Smell just started 1/20/2005.
Any ideas or has anyone else had this problem?
Engine Smell in Cabin - V70
My wife had a similar problem with her '98 S70. There was a burning smell after the car was warmed up. We took it to one dealership while we were on vacation and they replaced the cabin air filter. This did nothing for the smell, and we lost fifty bucks! We took it to the dealership when we got home and they replaced the heat exchanger and it solved the problem. We also had the evaporator and AC compressor replaced at the same time, but I believe it was for a separate issue, but easier to replace while we had everything torn apart. They always say that though.
Hope this helps!

has to do nothing with the solution but reminds me of the good old highschool days when a few of my friends and i would open another friends car and drop raw meat or cheese down the vents in the summer...
maybe you have a few neighborhood hoodlums... good luck
Had the same problem with my 850. Turned out to be a broken EGR hose. From my experience, the exhaust seemed to be forced into the cabin when the car was in motion, so maybe this explains why there was little odour while idling.
