2002 Cross transmisison problems
An interesting problem has developed with my Cross Country V70 XC 2002 model. It seems to go into neutral when changing down or when the vehicle is slowed. The gear it misses is 3rd gear, it just seems to go into angel gear and the engine revs until it grabs the gear with a huge thud. It is worse when slowing from 110 k's down to say around 60 if coming into a town, especially if there's a roundabout. The problem seems worse when making a right turn as well. Any suggestions. I have just had the oil changed and some valve replaced at the same time. Seemed a little better but the last couple of days it has reverted back. Is it mechanical or electronic?

Have you checked your transmission fluid level? My S70 did something similar a couple of weeks ago when it developed a leak (detached ATF line at the radiator) and I had lost about 3 quarts of fluid). If this is the case, I would say that rounding a corner further pushes the level of the fluid down in the essential part of the transmission...

As usual (with most posters) you failed to mention the mileage and at what mileage did you do this service.
When you post back read off your receipt EXACTLY what they did.
2002 trannies are not much better than 2001's except they didn't have the stop neutral feature. They're basically still bad ransmissions, Aisin Warner introduced the new valvebody in
the 2003 models which helped a ton!

G'day all,
I am from Australia and the vehicle has 185,000 k's on board. It is a late 2001 build with a 2002 sale badge, made is Sweden. I am wondering is there some id number that will tell me what type of transmission is fitted?
The transmission was fully flushed out with the proper fluid etc. A full oil change.
I have read some of the other historical posts and I am fearful it has the plague that the 2001 cross country's have. I am unsure if the latest computer programs have been downloaded into the computer, but I will have it checked at the dealer next week.
The car is a wonderful example, in extremely good condition, we love it, it is beautiful and comfortable to ride in but if its got the plague then it has to go I am afraid. I am not spending 5 grand on a transmission when even that might not fix it completely.
What in the name of God were the idiots thinking when they made a transmission that deliberately goes into neutral when slowing from speed or making a turn?

The stop neutral function can be disabled with a software installation at the dealer. If yours hasn't been done, have them do it. If they scratch their heads like they don't know what you're talking about, post back and I think one of us can help you with the actual software part number (may take a bit of searching but I know it's out there). That said, all of these XC's came with the same transmission- your model year, the '01's and even the '03's, so it's not the transmission itself but the way it was controlled on the earliest ('01 model- and possibly yours). The transmission is AW50/51AWD (made by Aisin-Warner, thus the AW designation).

I beg to disagee.
The 01-02 transmissions are exactly the SAME (except 2002's did not have the stop neutral).
2003's have a better valve body.
You continue to fail to tell me WHEN you had (at what mileage) the transmission serviced?
If it was over 100K miles for the 1st time, the damage has been done.
Updating it with the lastest software, resetting the adaptors and doing acorrect drive cycle right afterwards may help, I don't know, but that's the 1st thing to do with the problems you're describing.

All he asked about was the transmission- in VADIS, the transmissions come up as the same- I suppose that technically the valve body could be different but w/ the same transmission part numbers- Volvo parts are a conundrum especially when we're talking about an Australian model- which could have been a '01 in the U.S....If I recall, model years for Europe are typically listed as a year earlier than for the U.S. market- don't know about for Australia. That said, glad JRL is here to set us straight- after all, he probably has more experiences with these later cars than anyone else here.JRL wrote:I beg to disagee.

The transmission service has just been done at 185000 kms. The oil that came out was as black as night. It is unknown if there has ever been any previous services done on the transmission......probably not.
So its cactus then???
Is there ahy7 id prefix on the transmission to say what type it was?
