Do you have a failing Electronic Throttle Module? What steps to take if you do, plus the latest ETM news. Volvo 1999-2002 models only please.

99V70 Just had ETM rebuilt (XEMODEX) Poor acceleration.

Post by washjayb »

I Just received my rebuilt Throttle (XEMODEX) today. ETS light was on for about a year. 165K on original throttle (white Label, countless cleanings (DIY). After install ETS light went off. The car has very poor acceleration and is very slow to move from stop. ETS light returned after about 5 miles. I took the vehicle onto the interstate. I got it up to 80. The acceleration was smooth but slow to respond. The ETM seems to be working perfectly given the vehicles uneven and jerky response in the past. No surging while driving. Slight jumping of RPM's while in drive at complete stop.

Important to note. Just prior to this repair tensioner failed causing car to jump timing. Had it towed to dealership for repair. Repairs as follows:

Replaced Tensioner
Timing Belt
4 Intake Valves
4 Exhaust Valves
oil change
spark plugs
Dealer advised: replace faulty throttle and check for any other faults.

-Days before the timing belt incident, the fuel pump and fuel pump relay were replaced.

Possible MAF failure? Please advise.

Welcome to MVS.
It could be the MAF....
Do you get any codes?
May be as simple as disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes or so to allow your car to adapt to the new ETM.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks- MVS has been a great resource. Too bad i didn't find out about the ETM recall until after my vehicle was outside of warranty. Bought it in 2006 and put on nearly 70K with no problems outside of the ETM issue.

I have no diagnostic tools at the moment but plan to check for codes in the morning. I have the battery disconnected overnight. Tomorrow I'll clean the MAF before reconnecting. Afterward I'll take the car to the local VOLVO shop to read codes. Thanks again- Updates to follow.

I Just reconnected the battery after cleaning MAF. Drove about 2 miles. performance slightly improved. No ETS Light. After returning home I realized that I did not reconnect MAF. Gotta get to work. will have Tech at Dealer and independent take a look at it.

If it's driving rather well without the MAF and badly with the MAF, then it is the MAF.
