Welcome to MVS.
This is a tough one if the mechanics can't figure it out.
You might try posting your same question on the http://www.s40concepts.net/newforum/ website.

I think this might be the same issue your having. my car will do the same thing every now and then. But not as often as yours. It did not do it for 6 months and then 2 weeks ago it happen again. But after 5 minutes it started right up.

I have the same problem. I can't figure it out either. I'm leaning towards the security system in regards to the key code to computer. You might want to try a different key. I know you replace it already but it's still worth a try.

I know you said you changed your keys, but did you try wiggling it in your ignition? It could be that your ignition switch has poor contacts and is starting to go. This is a fairly common problem on 850's and some x70's- could be with your S40 as well.

well after exactly 2 hours and my car not starting, rode my bike back to work. Yes jiggled the key. I even tried the other key. I jiggled the shifter. tried to start in neutral. Nothing. Just got home from work and it started right up. shut if off and stared right up again. i turned it off for the 3rd time and it started right away. this is driving me nuts.

on sunday i drove my car several places. quite a bit of start and stop and not an issue. today i got up and drove probably 3 miles. car set for 20 minutes and would not start. it had to set there for over 2 hours before it would start again. drove the 3 miles back home. turned it off and it started right back up. tried it 3 times and it started away each time.

drove from work (2 miles) to home for lunch on Saturday. One hour later car would not start again. Had to catch a ride back to work from neighbor. Got home 4 hours later and the car started right up. On Sunday drove the car several places and not a problem. Today took it to the mechanic, he put it on the computer, nothing came back showing a problem. no trouble codes appeared. said maybe could be in the switch or on the shifter, or something else. either way I hate to start replacing things unless i know it will solve the issue.

I agree with MIJ in the other thread: it's likely battery cables, ground, etc. Something electrical.

When the car gets warm, somewhere in your Volvo the metal is expanding and the short is happening. You just need to find it.

I'd start by removing the battery and looking at the cables closely for corrosion. It could be the battery, but it's not likely.
