clutch problem-engages almost immediately

Post by polandexpress »

I have replaced the clutch assemblies, release arm and bearing.
I have replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders.
The clutch engages about 1/2 an inch from the floor. I have bled the system to remove the air but I suspect there is still some trapped. I have used the normal method of tube and jar and have used an ezi bleed kit using pressure from the spare tyre. How can I remove the air?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

To check that there is air still in the system pump the pedal 2 or 3 times before engaging gear and bringing clutch pedal up. If the point of engagement is higher then you do have air in the system.

That tip was to see if you have still got air in the system.

The positive way to know that brakes or clutch have been properly bled is to use ATE Super Blue or Super Gold fluid. When the colour is all blue or all gold in your collecting jar you know you have done a complete change of fluid.

Have bled the system fully. I have sometimes difficulty getting gears. Reverse always crunches. Yesterday I was unable to get any gears for a while when driving. I lifted the bonnet with the engine running and noticed the clutch release arm wobbling slightly. I disconnected the clutch slave cylinder and took the rubber cover off of the bell housing and shone a tourch to see. There seems a lot of shiney particals and the release bearing is wobbling although there is no noise. Some of this vibration is felt through the clutch peddle. The clutch assembly was changed just over a year ago. Can you suggest what is happening?

I think you are going to have to take the clutch apart again to find out what is happening inside. Take up point near the floor, reverse crunching and gears hard to get all indicate a worn clutch. The shiny particles could be from the release bearing or from the clutch assembly itself.

When you replaced the clutch did you use an alignment tool and did you check the release fork for wear at the pivot points? This wear is a known problem on 740 release forks and prevents the release bearing making a firm contact with the pressure plate.

Hi Bill
The clutch was changed by a garage. Six months later the Slave cylinder push rod punched a hole through the release arm. I changed this for a new one.

Some clutches have a 2 year, 20,000 mile warranty when fitted by garages or specialist centres. I definitely think your clutch is on the way out by the symptoms you have posted.

There is a Mr. Clutch centre in Nottingham. They will do a free check on your clutch, usually while you wait. If they think as I do you can go back to the garage that fitted it and see if there is a warranty.

For exact location of Mr. Clutch call 0800 67 67 67.
