Dear Matthews Volvo Site Forums
Good Morning from the lovely Pacific Northwest.
I wish better circumstances were bringing me here. It started out as difficult to turn and proceeded to impossible to turn the key. I tried every thing to turn the key.
The car was stuck in Park.
I was able to get a technician from the dealership to talk to me.
It was dark and I was going to be stranded in the night. The car was going to have to be left in a parking lot all night also because there is no night recieving at the dealership in Portland. Yikes.
I did make it home complete with laptop and purse, no coat, just a small jacket.Riding the MAX and then walking the remaining 12 blocks to my home.
My Toyota pick-up is a 1998, it has never stranded me like this. I am angry with The Volvo.
I have had two tows so far and now the car is at the Dealership, JimFisher Volvo. In west Portland. Guess what, they sort of chastised me for not having an appointment.
My car is a 2004 V70
52K miles
My question, has anyone had experience with a problem like this?
Also , The outcome, possible solution to this issue.
Do I have a lemon?
What is going on.. Any and all insight is appreciated.
I am here and watching this thread. This morning I have called dealership.
They said they would call, when they have a diagnosis.
I am still looking for some advice concerning this. Does anyone know of a forum with Volvo Mechanics?
Has anyone had this issue with a hard to start then dificcult to start then impossible to start, stuck in park?
Thank-you for the consideration.
OK,This is exactly what happened.
I detailed out the car.
I got in and turned the key, The key was hard to turn in the ignition.
The car started, I went to class, I turned off the car.
Then proceeded to attempt to turn the car back on. The ignition would not turn, the key would not turn the ignition on.
I called a technician, he said to try to force the key to turn.
I am very strong and attempted to force the key as directed.
I am a little wary, aware that the key could break and this could cost much $$.
I talked with the technician from the local Volvo dealership and he said to step on the brake hard, turn the wheel hard, turn the key hard, all at the same time. As much as I was capable , I did this.
The car started once and then accelerated a bit and died.
The car would never come out of park.
The key would turn a lttle but nothing happened.
It would turn about 1/2 the way needed to actually start the car.
Several times the radio and heater (lights= no power to stereo and fan) did not come on when the key was in the correct position.
Hope this helps with diagnosis.
Thank you for responding. I appreciate it.
I was ranting a bit earlier..
Thank -you for your consideration of this matter. I feel so much better as I peruse the site. I have found so much helpful information on this wonderful site. Renewed confidence over comes my doubt and worry.
Peace,LS

Welcome to MVS.
It sounds like your ignition module is starting to go (or has given up its ghost).
Have you been able to get someone to read the trouble codes for your wagon? We have the same wagon and some codes will come up as generic and can be read fine and converted to what Volvo says is an issue but some are Volvo specific codes. I would venture to say that an ignition module is most likely going to be something that has to be read by a Volvo scan tool, so I would recommend the dealer or an larger independent garage who works on Volvo's so they can accurately problem solve this. Actually more information would be helpful in helping us understand...when the ignition became harder to turn, was there any sound (clicking for instance) or did the car start as soon as the key was turned all the way? Are you saying that the key won't turn at all now? Any more information would be helpful, but it certainly sounds like you're probably in for a new ignition module- at least the mechanical portion of it. Good luck and hopefully others will also give their input. Hopefully someone has had something similar happen to them and can post from experience.
