Battery drain

Post by Canvolvo »

My landlord has a 2004 V70 that the battery will go dead in a few days if he's not using it. He took it to the dealer who told him that they checked for a drain on the battery but there was none. I said BS and looked at it myself and sure enough with everything off and shut down there is over a 600ma draw on the system. I have isolated the drain to fuse #32, it's the far right row 3rd one down in the drivers side cluster. I believe it says it's the ecm and courtesy lights. It controls the dash inst cluster and heater controls but does not shut off the interior lights when pulled. I'm thinking it's a bad relay that is not releasing but have no idea where it might be other than under the DS dash. Anyone else have this problem? what was it?

Thanks for any info.
Marc

Fuse 11C/32 connects two places: the CEM (Central Electronic Module) and it feeds fuse 11/C38 (a 5amp that's the last fuse in the RH-most column in that passenger compartment fuse box). Does yanking #38 change the current draw any?

I have not tried it with 32 removed. I started at the bottom of that row and worked my way up to 32 before I noticed any change. It dropped from the over 600ma to about 60-80ma once I pulled #32.

Thanks for the help so far :D

Ah, okay, then since you pulled #38 without any change, the problem is likely either a) a relay in the CEM or b) the CEM itself.

The CEM is under the dash on the driver's side. Remove the driver's side soundproofing and you'll be looking at the CEM (it looks like a relay center). You can pull relays one at a time and see if the current draw stops...just make sure to replace each relay after you've removed it, as it's not impossible to put them back incorrectly.

I think he said the amps dropped from 600 mAmp to 60 mAmp or 540 mAmps! Since it was stated that the courtesy lights are part of the circuit, have you checked the glove box light? This is a know failure mode. Open the box and quickly feel the temperature. If it already warm, then that's the problem, or pull the bulb and check for results again. Good luck and post back with results.

That was one of my first thoughts...bulb was already removed from the glove box light. I'll play with that relay center this weekend and see what I come up with. We were getting snow the other day and I really didn't feel like laying out under the dash LOL. Thanks again for the help.
