850 94 T5- Repaint trim/spoiler,help..

Post by danw »

I would love to repaint my 94 T5's door trim, rear and front bumper-spoiler, handles etc. dont really know where to start...
I am unsure how to remove the door stops, are they clipped in with breakable clips or are they simply taped/glued on?

Has anyone done a colour code repaint for this model?

Any help appreciated..

Don't understand the question, what's a "door trim"?

yeah sorry, I mean the bump strips on all 4 doors, they are charcoal/grey in colour on my burgundy 850 as too are my mirror surrounds door handles back and front spoiler etc. I was wanting to colour code this with the burgundy and basically modernise the beast a bit, however I am unsure the best way around the process. I was thinking of removing the parts (unsure how to remove the bump strips however) prepping them and getting them professionally sprayed, its a fiddly job and wont be cheap to get the whole project professionally done.

The rub strips on the doors are usually attached by a double sided adhesive tape, get a heat gun and carefully soften the adhesive so you can remove the trim without taking paint off behind it. Try not to overheat, if the trim is to hot to touch, it is to hot! Get it professionally done, It should be pretty cheap; as I was charged $50 for a the missing driver door trim including painting and installation at ReVolv in Saskatoon two hours north of me. Careful with faded colours though, an amateur will not match the new paint to the old faded paint.

None of that is necessary, any good bumper paint that you can buy at an automotive store is about the same color(gray/black).
CAREFULLY mask them off, scuff, prep then spray bomb them.

I've done several of these and as long as you do several thin coats it will look great!
I wouldn't try to make an 850 to look like a '70. The work involved to make these moldings smooth is a lot. If you spray them with the bumper paint they will look fresh and as new.
PLUS, your car has to be faded a bit so new burgandy paint (on the moldings) will stand out like a sore thumb.

I think he is trying to match is trim to the factory colours, not put a new coat of bumper paint on them.

I want to paint my '97 850 T5 spoiler also. It's definately much worse in terms of fading, peeling and general bad lookingness than the body of the car. The spoiler is clearly plastic. (This is the full turbo spoiler that is raised up above the trunk and has the brake light array on it.) My spoiler matches the (#421-42 Emerald Green Metalic) body color. Does anyone know if I have to find a special paint for the spoiler since it's plastic? Or can I use the regular body paint that's designed for the metal body? Either way, where can I get spray cans of OEM paint colors. All of the "regular" Volvo parts places seem to only sell Paint Pens. Thanks -Peff

I have had good luck getting the colors to match from http://www.paintscratch.com . They will want to sell you a ton of extra stuff that you can get at any auto parts store for half the price but you can de-select it before you check out.
