Volvo Repair Database how to change starter motor?

Post by mikeeyuk »

HI, Ive got a 97 S40 TD, and really would like some advice on removing the starter motor. Does the turbo and manifold need to be completely removed? I started the job this afternoon and so far ive removed the nuts from the exhaust manifold and turbo. On the underside of the Turbo is a chrome pipe which I somehow need to loosen and remove. Looks to be a nightmare job for just replacing the starter motor. does anyone have any words of wisdom???

No words of wisdom only VADIS instructions which make it seem like a fairly simple job:

To remove:
Disconnect battery negative lead.
Disconnect positive lead and connector of starter relay.
Remove three fixing bolts from starter motor. Top bolt also holds the cable support.
Slide starter motor to rear, turn and lift upwards.

To reinstall:
Transfer locating bush to new starter motor.
Reinstall in reverse order.
Torque bolts to 50nm.

I would have thought it would be more complicated so I looked up the times allowed for the job on two repair discs. Both came out at 1.3 hours.

Sorry I can't help further.

thanks Bill. I managed to get the starter out last night, rigged it to the battery and it worked perfectly. Slightly annoying really because I was hoping/convinced that was the reason why the car wouldnt turn over. Perhaps the re assembly process may jault something. fingers crossed and all. Failing that I m thinking of ebaying her for spares of repairs...

Drastic, but understandable.

Have you checked all wiring? Negative lead from the battery for good, clean connection to the body. Earth strap from the engine/gearbox to the body. Positive lead from the battery to the starter solenoid.

If you have done all this, I apologize but they are things that have affected some of my cars over the years.

HI Bill , ive tried all those things. Re assembled the starter motor yesterday morning and tried to start but again nothing. So I bypassed the ignition and turned the starter motor over direct from the battery which worked fine. So that told me the ignition was at fault. Theres always been two wires connected to the battery which dont look part of the original volvo wiring loom, so thinking that maybe a DIY imobiliser I removed the fuses and guess wot, she starts perfectly now. So after all this, Im now back to square one which is to fit the water pump, but at least she starts lol... I'll probably be back online later looking for advice for how to remove the water pump pulley, assuming it doesnt simply slide off?

anyway thanks for your help again,,

Mike

Trying to remove starter motor from 850 volvo, is this normally done under neither car or above car. Access seems imposable. What is normal removal procedure.

95/850 turbo 2.3L

Hello guys! thanks for posting,

I've been having the same problem as mikeeyuk, i think? I'd turn the ignition and get a click, i thought it must be a problem with the starter/solenoid. So, i took out the starter after checking the battery, and tested the starter/solenoid. The solenoid engages and the starter motor works fine. :?:  i reassembled everything. And got a really week turn over and .... click  . So today I got the battery tested/charged to make sure it is good. Now i figure it must be a connection issue as Billofdurham suggested. I seem to have power to the starter and battery, but like mikeeyuk was saying there are 2 wires coming off the positive terminal of the battery, could it be a grounding issue with one of those 2 wires? pulling power away from the starter? If this sound plausible, can i disconnect them ,safely, and try turning the motor over?

Thank you for your time and consideration Gents :D

I was having the same problem, my V70 would not start when warm, so I replaced the fuel gas regulator, fixed the fuel injectors and replaced the fuel filter....after all this when I was about to start the engine, nothing..after few times trying I realized the engine was flooded with gasolise :( Next morning after a long time thinking about it, I figured out it could be the starter motor, so a friend punched it two or three times while I was trying to start the engine (this time not hitting the gas), and the car finally started, I went direct to a Oil shop and get the old one with gasoline out, changed the Oil filter and changed the oil. ( got really mad about it!) Ok, the car still have troubles to start but now a new one is going on, a click sound comes out from the engine right after starting it. I dind´t fix the starter motor yet, Do anybody have any idea what should I do next?
