Depends on the color I believe. I have a '94 and it's dark blue- definitely 2 stage as s bit of the clear cote near the front is peeling. I have read that the red was only one stage (and maybe white). Others may know better than me.

My Platinum is a three stage paint. Like MIJ, I think most of the rest were two stage.

Pull your paint color off of the product plate (decoder ring here)

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/850plates.shtml

and then try http://www.paintscratch.com - it should detail the specifics about the paint.

From years of forum-read I am pretty sure the red R model (609) was single stage. For sure the majority of other colors have a clear coat. There may be one or two more single stage novelties like white(?). Oh and yellows were all single stage.

And from owning a black 95 T-5R I can tell you for sure that has a clear coat.

The fifth digit in a five digit paint code represents the type of paint and the kind of finish that has been used:
C= Color, S = Supplier, F = Type. CCC-SF

1 – a solvent based paint or metallic paint.
2 – a waterbased paint with metallic or pearl finish.
3 – a solid waterbased paint with only varnish (non-metallic).
4 – a solvent-based paint with varnish (non-metallic).
5 – a solvent-based paint with a pearl finish and varnish.
6 – a waterbased paint and 2-component varnish.
7 – a waterbased paint and a powder-varnish.

I believe real red was a single stage paint. At least the 94 Volvo 460 my friend's mom had was single stage, it had to be buffed from orange to red every year. All of my 850ies are dual stage, bit I have a spare white trunk lid that also seems to be single stage, though I'm not sure.
