Volvo S60 2002 2.4T - fan will not shut off
Volvo S60 2002 2.4T - fan will not shut off
Last week my wife returned from work with the Volvo and the radiator fan sounded kind of weird. Normally, the fan will stay on for a short period of time to cool the coolant down while the engine is switch off. The next day, I found the Volvo battery to be completely drained. Evidently, the fan failed to switch off. Could the fan relay be fused in the "on" position that would keep the fan running continuously? I went to my local Volvo dealer and they claimed that the entire fan assembly needs to be replaced. Does my model not have a fan relay that is separate from the fan assembly? Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Yes, your car does have a fan relay (I believe it's up under the fan shroud on the passenger's side)- the fact that the fan itself runs means that it is still good. Don't let the dealer sucker you into buying something you don't need (not to mention their labor costs).

Thank you for your response. I appreciate your input. I have created an account on Auto Parts Warehouse and have placed an order for a new fan relay (part # W0133-1615406) and a temperature sensor (part # W0133-1615486.) I should receive it by next week. I will update the thread concerning my progress when I am done. Hopefully, this situation will help other Volvo owners. Best Regards.

cdanao,
The part number you mentioned for your fan relay seems to be an air pump relay (found this on many sites). On your car, it does not have a fan relay, it has a fan control module, built onto the fan shroud by the fan motor. This module is not replaceable by itself, it is part of the fan assembly. Volvo gets $445 for the unit. FCP Groton gets $250 for an aftermarket unit. Someone mentioned a fan relay under the shroud, earlier S70s did have a 2-speed fan relay separate, and individually replaceable, from the fan.
