High pitched sound when turning ignition on

Post by nunucpf »

Great sight everyone. Thanks for being there.
I have a 2000 Volvo XC 70 wagon
Car has 105K miles

The following items have been replaced:
radiator, timing belt, Heating coil, front brakes.

I bought the car in Aug 2008, I am second owner. Car has been running great, especially after all the work that was done to it. I do have one problem that no one can resolve.
Most of the time, when I start the engine, a high pitched whining sound emits from the car for about 3-5 seconds. It can get pretty loud. Also, this occasionally happens when I shut off the engine. I heard somewhere that there might be a problem with the starter
and flywheel. I know nothing about cars, I hope one of you can shed some light for me. Was this ever a major volvo problem? Are there any recalls on this?

Thanks
Nunu

Welcome to MVS.
Yes, it does sound like the starter to me... or it could be the belt or related component that that belt touches (most likely from the service belt and not the timing belt). Get them checked. Neither are typical Volvo events and never enough of an issue (actually pretty rare) that there was ever a recall.

Thanks for your input. I went to Specialized Auto in Santa Cruz, Volvo experts, he told me that it sounds like a hissing sound, not a high pitched sound. He believes that there is an air leak in one of the hoses.
I am taking it in next week so they can run a check on it. I will mention to check the service belts.
Ciao for now

i too own a 2000 xc and it emits a similar sound. it isn't from the engine bay however, mine is audible from the ventilation system leading me to believe it is a blower motor or something related.

TX valve on the AC maybe? They vent as they equalize...maybe there is a slight plug and it's squealing
