Well, yesterday I was finally able to get the trans fluid flushed and filled with a new filter. Let me say, who ever had this car before me is a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ retard! They replaced the original trans with one stamped 03-70 Which I guess is the AW70 or 70L. Anyways, the filter was installed improperly, and 90% of the bolts in the valve body were only finger tight.
I pulled the old filter out, and replaced with the correct filter and installed correctly, tightened up all valve body bolts to recommended torque ratings, followed my uncles advice on how to get the old fluid out of the torque converter, then replaced the pan gasket and pan and bolted up everything.
After putting the new fluid in, and letting it idle for ten minutes and then checking it to make sure it was at the correct level, I took it for a drive. Let me say, victory is mine.
I guess it just needed the valve body to be tightened down and new fluid and filter.
Anyways, my hunt will continue for a three speed auto when I get the money to put it back to stock. There are so many problems with this car due to the previous owner, I should have never bought it.
New Trans Fluid...

A chance we all take when buying used. There are so many problems with this car due to the previous owner, I should have never bought it.
It is good to know that you have sorted out that problem.

I know... she runs smooth, just seems like I can't quite get the power back... I had the timing belt slip on me the other day when getting the trans parts (guess I didn't tighten down the tensioner bolt all the way). But now I can't quite figure out where I had the cam and distributor set at... I had the no. 1 spark plug out to find TDC set the cam there, and set the distributor to its mark, and it just seems like it is lacking power at the top end...
I wonder if it is cause of my vac hoses... the distributor has a vac advance/retard on it. instead of just one vac fitting on it there are two. and on the intake, there are two fittings that fit the same hose as the distributor, and one has full vac at idle and loses it at any movement of the throttle, then the other fitting has no vac until the throttle is opened...
seems the car likes advanced spark, but I can only achieve that at idle or at throttle and leave the other side of the distributor vac line off... I wonder if I just advance the distributor some more and then put the idle vac line on the retard side and the advance on the advance side, but then it seems my timing is too far advanced at throttle...
Any help?

I'm thinking about doing my tranny filter and gasket the next time I work on my Volvo. Did you have any trouble getting the dipstick tube bolt separated from the transmission pan? That's really where I'm kind of scared to go through with it.
yeah, the dipstick was a SOB to get loose... some reason I think my threads are screwed up... but it was hard at first, used a pair of crooked nose channel locks to grip it without rounding off the nut. once i got it to turn it was easy, the really hard part was getting the thing back on... but a little patience goes a long way.
Advice though, take apart the pan and get the filter before buying the new filter... mine came from a 1983 so the part numbers were completely different than the 78. that is if you have another car, if not be 100% sure of what year your trans came from before going to the parts store.
