V70 2002brake shudder

Post by john_boy1959 »

Having the front discs machined and then replaced with new units has not cured front brake shudder which is quite pronounced when braking from higher speeds. Any ideas? Thanks to those who have posted some answers to my clunking gerbox - I will try the oil; change straight away! More info - I did change the rotors with no improvement to the shudder!

Welcome to MVS.
I would say it's your rotors- typically, I never turn or machine the Volvo discs- they just become too thin and warp easily, developing the symptoms you describe. I'm in the routine of changing 2 pads to each disc replacement. You can get Brembo or Zimmerman discs for your car for very little. Free shipping (due to weight that's the way to go) from a place like eeuroparts.com I'd say that changing out the discs (rotors) will cure your problem.

did you install new pads along with the new rotors and follow a break-in procedure as described by the brake pad manufacturer?

Like madeinjapan stated, dont turn rotors and use 2 pad sets for every rotor (if you can).

Are you getting the feeling in the steering wheel or in your butt? Just asking since they mean two different things. If you just feel the shudder in the seat and not on the steering wheel then it's the rears.

Most of the cause of shuttering during braking is due to high points on the rotors. This is from coming to a fast stop and leaving your foot on the brakes once you come to the stop. When you heat up your brakes enough and then push the pads up against the rotors you are burning in the resin onto that single spot. Just a very thin layer is all it takes for a high point to start and over time it builds!

You could try bedding in the brakes with used pads but in my opinion this only works well with new pads...

If you can deal with the shuttering then drive it till the pads wear out and then replace the whole set-up.

If the old pads still have a lot of meat on them and are OEM (what I recommend) you can put them in a vice and use some sand paper (on a drill works well) and scuff or buff them a bit and then reuse them. I've done this a few times with good results to resurface them. The above post is correct- when you first use your pads, it's important to get them hot several times in a row (I do a 60-75 to about 20 MPH) and then drive a few miles and repeat 5 or 6 times but never come to a complete stop if I can help it...if I do, I let off the brakes and slowly roll to where I need to stop.... Next few days go easy on the brakes but after that you're home free. Putting the brake pedal down hard at a stop and leaving it there when the pads are brand new does leave resin on the rotors which will build and make "hot spots" later on. I know everyone has different procedures on bedding and breaking in pads and rotors, but the above is my way which has worked very well for me so far.

I do 10X hard braking from 60-10mph
Drive around and let them cool then repeat a second time.

Sounds about right...I probably don't do enough of the hard braking to really "set" the pad and get the resin out of them.
