850 turbo

Post by eddy »

just made an offer on a 1996 850 turbo, and the guy accepted. Unforturnatly I have to wait til Tues since the banks are closed Mon....oh well. Anyhow, I was wondering about the horns. I've read before that if you have a turbo you should relocate the horns. Here are two questions regarding that, (1) why? (2) where do you relocate them to?

also, is there anything turbo specific I should check on the car right away?

thanks

Relocating the horns is purely intended to increase performance. Many move them to just forward of the (as you sit in it) left front wheel, but it's down where dirt and water can get in them. If you do it, aim them down so liquid drains out.

The horns are 'in the way' of the airstream to the intercooler, and thus the air is cooled less. I'd say keeping the tires inflated 4 psi more would net you just as much overall speed gain.

as far as turbo issues go, the turbo that volvos uses (Mitsubishi) is pretty bullet proof. I've heard stories of them lasting 150K miles or more. Just the basic oil change and coolant flush should keep them running smoothly. Also, letting the car idle for about a minute after you park it is supposed to help increase the life of the turbo. The innards of the turbo get extrmeley hot during normal use. Something like 0-100,000 RPM in less than .5 seconds.

Good choice on a great car...
