Whats killing my coils?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Whats killing my coils?

Post by gemuth »

Last weekend i finished putting my top end back together with a fresh valve job.My no.4 coil was bad so i replaced it,but i put the new coil in no 1 and put the no 1 coil in the #4 spot. After driving about 150 miles the car started running rough. The code scanner told me that the no 4 coil is bad, i checked it and sure enough its bad.Could this be a coinidence on no 4 or is something taking out these coils? The other code that comes up is the p0011which means one of my cams is off a bit,but i cant see that that would be the cause of the coil failure. :(

It could be a coincidence, however, I think it's highly unlikely. The two things I can think of that might take out the coils are heat and too much electrical power. Are you sure the coolant passages in the head are clear and getting good coolant flow?

The temp on the car seems fine,i drove it all week
and the temp needle stayed right in the middle
where it should be.Im not sure how to check on the
electrical power, that would seem to be controled by
the computer.I guess ill pick up another one and put the new one in 4 ,and if it goes it should be covered by a warranty.
