First off thanks again for all your help. MIJ, i got the post and I am a little stumped, I guess you mean the S80 turbo is not water cooled? My turbo is water cooled.
So no sign of smoke in the dip stick. I did a test of the cooling for hydrocarbons and it was negative. I cleaned out the air discharge and the oil re-appeared. So I went ahead and pulled the turbo. Found the oil return leaking from the block and lots of oil on the turbo body. I really was still questioning my decision until I pulled off the exhaust. It was really wet with oil!
It was a relatively straight forward job. Ran into a couple of snags but I got it out! Now the hunt for turbo parts! I called Royal Volvo in SF and was surprised they didn't even carry all the basic gaskets let alone a rebuild kit. I have to decide if its worth the $700 to get it rebuilt and back in running shape or delay it a week chasing parts.
Thanks again for the assistance, I'll keep you posted.

I see...interesting...the file I found from VADIS showed no water cooling for your turbo- I'm stumped too. Anyway, you're better off buying a used turbo (some over on Volvospeed.com) or a rebuild kit for yours on eBay ($70-$80 shipped).
