240GL 1986 What's the black stuff???

hi everyone.

my wagon has a couple of rust bubbles around the rear window i am going to remove these but in the process will remove some of the black skin like stuff, what is it??? a rust preventer ??? anyone know the name of it so i can get some to make it all good.

That is a plasticized film that Volvo seemed to love sticking on as a finishing touch to several of their models. It is not listed on VADIS.

The 850 has one small area on the rear doors just behind the window. I found a small patch of rust on my 850 in that area and the "Chips Away" painter, formerly a Volvo bodyshop manager, said they were a waste of time and he couldn't get anything to replace them. He advised removing all of that stuff on the affected door and painting the area in satin black. It was indistinguishable from the original. You may have to do the same.
