What is this... and is this a problem?

The grey thing near the intercooler hose is (I think) a solenoid that is part of the secondary air system. According to the diagram on Eeuroparts, two vac hoses go to it. One connects to the air pump check valve, the other end goes to a one way valve and then to the vac tree. I think those are the only connections to it. I had mine loose yesterday to change out the radiator.

All right.. I'll be replacing the IC hose.

binglax09 - thanks for the tips... I think I already apologized for the lack of great photos due to the use of my iPhone.

MIJ, I do have an EGR, but a hose already runs to it off the vacuum tree; I wonder if anyone would have a diagram they could post for this vacuum tree. I simply couldn't locate a vacant nipple anywhere or place to attach the missing hose.

MIJ; or anyone who might know for sure... in the last attachment you posted (or the bottom one; depending on how you look at it) where does the #19 elbow attach too (it is the #20 pipe)? The diagram doesn't show, that's the one I'm trying to figure out.

Should attach to the vacuum tree on upper end and I believe a solenoid on the lower end attached to the fan shroud...but I'm not for certain. I suppose I could go look at our 850 w/ EGR... but my son has it out right now and won't be home for awhile.

On second thought you're talking about a turbo car so you don't have an EGR, right? I'm getting confused as so many of these cars have similar routing (the large diagram on the 1st page is for a turbo) but are just slightly different...if you're looking at #19 going from the tree (on top) to elsewhere and it's not related to the EGR at all, it could be hooking up to the EVAP line...there should be a one way (possibly white and black) valve before attaching to a this sort of white plastic looking line that goes to the EVAP solenoid closer to the driver's side...almost in front of the battery under the fan/radiator shroud.

MIJ - I do have an EGR - it connects to the vacuum tree. I ordered and have picked-up a new vacuum tree, it also came with the third nipple as mine does (only mine has a screw in it).

The volvo tech. at the dealer seemed a little stumped and I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen a 90's Volvo in quite sometime from his response.

I simply can't find any hoses or anything that should attach to that nipple for my car. I'm going to cap the new one to ensure no atmospheric pressure games.

Speaking of EGR, I'm going to be dropping the throttle body and Fuel Pressure Regulator in the Parts Cleaner for a few hours tomorrow night... is it a good idea to stick with carb cleaner on the EGR to clean it up? My understanding is that the solvent in the parts cleaner may be too hard on the EGR diaphram... anyone care to comment?

If this is the case, perhaps I may not want to drop my Fuel Pressure Regulator in the parts cleaner either?

I used carb cleaner on both of these part on my 850 and there were no ill effects.

Do you have a parts cleaner as an option though...? :)

I guess my question is more re: whether there is any concern for the FPR being left in the parts cleaner, I assume that there is some kind of diaphram in there that could be damaged?

Last night... ran out of time... tonight is the night!

Hopefully problems will cease on a large scale once all is done with this job.
