Speedometer went out

Post by SupaMike114 »

Hi guys. I new to the forum and im not really good with car stuff to please be patient with me. I just bought an 1987 Volvo 760 Sedan and a week later, the speedometer went out. I popped the hood and theirs a loose wire with a metal end that looks like it plugs into something. It wasnt loose before so Im assuming thats what made the speedo go out. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

What colour is the wire and is this the V6?

The wire is long, covered by a black tube but the end reveals a green and red wire with a copper tip that looks like it connects to something. And its a 4-Cylinder.

Long time searching through wiring diagrams has not revealed a green/red wire in the engine compartment.

Does the wire go through the bulkhead (firewall)?

Like I said i dont really know anything about cars. I'll take a pic of the wire. It might not be very good quality cause its from my phone, but its the only camera i have.

Yet another wiring diagram and I think it is most likely to be the wire to the engine compartment light, which is a particularly useless bit of kit. They are often disconnected as there is a possibility of a bad switch leaving the light on and draining the battery. If this is the case cover the end with insulating tape and tie it up out of the way.

The sensor for the speedo is in the differential and, in itself, rarely goes wrong. However, the wiring is a different matter. Make a careful check of the wires from the diff for breakage and, if necessary, clean the contacts.
