2004 C70 ignition key will not turn past #1 position, steering wheel unlocks fine but that's as far as it goes.

Thank you for any advice,

Kurt,
It's hard to say...I would guess that the mechanical portion of your ignition switch may have bit the dust and needs replacing. In the meantime, I would spray the key hole on your ignition with some silicone spray and work your key in and out several times and then see if it will turn. Also, if you have a second key, you might try it. Good luck and keep us posted.

I will give that a try.
I am the second owner, is there any chance this is still under warranty? 2004 with 35K.

Thank you,

Whats up Kurt. I just bought a 01' C70 turbo not too long ago and I just had a similar problem with my ignition. It wouldn't turn past position 1. No accessory lights, no nothing. I had to order a new ignition switch through Volvo. It costs $279. I had my Uncle install it and he said it was a pain. But I did find step by step instructions in this thread. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=13514

So from a new owner to a new owner I hope this helps....

Success!!

Well after researching the lock cylinder replacement and basically screwing around with this issue. Figuring I had nothing left to lose, I went for the lubricate and turn the key slowly increasing the pressure until it broke loose or the key looked like it was approaching failure. I sprayed some silicone lubricant inside the lock cylinder and shook/vibrated it as best I could then I sprayed some more, not to much. I waited a while then went for it. I added pressure to the point where I thought I was going to lose the key and it popped lose. As I turned it back and forth it was a little sticky for a few then it loosened up nicely. It's been a couple of weeks now and all is well, I also sprayed a little graphite in there as well. When it broke lose it did not feel like a mechanism broke or failed inside, it was like it was binding and released.

Thank you one and all for the helpful advise. If it ever fails completely at least I will know how to replace the Lock Cylinder.

Thanks again, Kurt
