coolant drain necessary 4 thermostat replacement?

Post by volvonewbie18 »

i'm replacing my thermostat and was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to drain the coolant. the coolant looks fine, smells fine and is at the right level. if i have to do it, does anybody know a cheaper equivalent to the volvo coolant

You only need to drain sufficient coolant to bring the level down below that of the thermostat. Collect it in a clean container and shove it back in when you have replaced the t-stat.

I think the best bet would be to connect the whites (which are really hot wires, not neutrals) to the other terminals of the thermostat. Whichever wire has the one black to one terminal should also have the white alone. These would go to the line side. The two black wires on one terminal should have the corresponding white on the load side of the terminal.

I think you're talking about the temperature sensor and not the thermostat...
I suck out the coolant from the over-flow tank and then just clamp off the lines going to the thermostat housing (both ends) and put a large towel under that area and not worry about the little spillage I get.
