Steering Wheel and front passenger seat shake over 65mph

Post by tmsc14 »

I just purchased a 2005 xc 70 with 36,000 mile on it. It is in great working order except the steering wheel has a slight vibration in it and the passenger seat vibrates at 65mph and over. Ihad new wheels put on, an alignment and balance. Got a little better but it is still there. The mechanic said I need new rotors but not to sure if this is causing the vibration since its not a braking problem. I know the pirelli tires are a little rough riding, but this cant be normal. The volvo dealer will not drive the car on the highway at high speeds. Any ideas what i should have them look for before i pump money into rotors.

thanks tom

See if you can find a shop that will do a balance with the wheels on the car. If this solves your problem, mark the wheels and hubs so you can put the wheels back on in the same position each time they are taken off.

I would check to make sure again that the tires are actually balanced. Just because they were done doesnt mean they did it right. Another thing to check would be to make sure the rims are true and not slighty bent. If the rotors were out of round (warped) you would have a pulsation in braking as well. You might also have someone recheck the front end for any looseness. Hope this will help.

I just bought a 2005 XC70 and have almost the identical situation going on. Previous owner had new Goodyear tires put on right before she sold it. I had them spin balanced and it maybe took the edge off, but that's all. It's really not all that bad, but not right either. Were you able to rectify the problem?

36k miles is very low milage but I would check the front drive axles perticularily the right one (it's much longer). I had a vibration problem and it drove me nuts for a long time here is a helpfull thread:

drive shaft going to the rear wheels has a carrier bearing located in the center of the drive shaft...check to see if the rubber bushing around the bearing is shot...if it is shot this is causing your vibration at speed. you cant change the bearing you must change the whole shaft...about 900.. dollars for the part.. also check right front half shaft....good luck
