Time for 60K Service

Post by Lancaster »

Gearing up for the 60K on an 05 V70 NA.

I'm planning:

Oil and Filter
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Spark Plugs (from IPD)
Trans Fluid full replacement (kit via IPD)
Tire rotation and normal visual inspections

A few questions:

Am I missing anything?
Anything special needed to remove plugs on the NA engine?

Welcome to MVS.
If you haven't already done this, I would replace the coolant and also the brake fluid. Also check the PTC nipple at the end of the PCV hose attached to the large air-intake accordion hose to see if it's getting clogged and clean it thoroughly so it's unrestricted all the way through. Btw, IPD offers many plugs- avoid the Bosch Platinum plug...get either Volvo OEM or Bosch Copper core plugs (they are cheap but you'll have to replace them sooner). Oh, and lube all of your hinges...Guess that's about it. Happy Volvoing!

Are you going to use synthetic oil?

Thanks for the heads up on that nipple:

Are you referring to the hoses going into the copper/brass color fitting which is about an inch long and makes a 90* bend before entering the front of the intake? I looks loke upstream from it there is a "Y" with one tube coming from the air box and one coming in from the ducting - would make sense for it to get clogged.

As far as the Dino vs Syth is concerned, here is where I landed:

On normally aspirated engines like my V70, I use GTX 10-30 Dino
On Turbos, I use GTX full synthetic (have an 06 S60 2.5T AWD too)
Both are charged at 5K

No, the brass looking fitting before the intake (if you're talking about the intake manifold) is a brake vacuum connection. The one I'm talking about has a bayonet connector, is made of plastic and is on the end of the accordion hose next to the turbo...the hose that connects to it is routed under the intake manifold and connects directly to the oil separator (AKA breather box). The plastic piece on the accordion hose described above has to be clear- some are able to clean it with alcohol and a bristle laden pipe clear...for others, it's so impacted and hard that it takes a drill bit and some brake cleaner. Hope this helps. Btw, if you've been using synthetic oil since the get-go, it may be fairly clear already and not much maintenance is really needed on the PCV system. A good test is to pull your oil dip stick while idling and see if smoke comes out of it. It should be sucking in and not blowing out.

Thanks for all the info. My V70 is a non-turbo. Is all this the same?

My experience is that GTX is very good oil. For the turbo my concern is oil temp in the turbo passages.

NA cars just do not stretch/push the oil that much. Unless you're racing a non-turbo and pushing the revs to the limits - synth is overkill at 5K shanges, which is where I am comfortable.

Sorry- No! Non -turbo's do not have a PTC nipple, but anywhere that the hose from the oil separator connects to should still be clear...take them loose and blow through them to make sure. If you've been using non-synthetic on your non-turbo, you may be in for a PCV service anyway but check your oil dipstick tube at idle to make sure there's no positive pressure in your engine...if you have suction there, then I'd just leave things and call it a day for now- check every oil change and when you get positive pressure, your intake manifold will have to come off to service or replace the oil separator and related hoses.
