I have a 2002 V40 1.9 Diesel. After 60,000 miles the original front discs warped. Since then it has been backwards and forward to the dealer for new discs. I am now on my 6th set of discs in 7 months!
Each time the discs last about 800 miles before they start to go. Sometimes the dealer has replaced the pads, sometimes not. Last time they also replaced the whole stearing rack - once again 800 miles and they were gone. I am being very careful to try to run the discs in while the surface hardens and avoid braking at all costs, but is does not work
I am told that Volvo UK have no technical people in the UK who can help me with this problem.
Any one an clues before I throw it off a cliff ?

this is a bizzar problem,
is there any play in your wheel bearings?
if your disks are warping they must be getting bloody hot, are they vented?
do the wheels turn freely? or are they continualy binding? hows your fuel consumption?

The discs are vented and as far as I know dealer is fitting proper Volvo parts. However, one of the service staff commented 'Volvo discs used to be poor - but they are a bit better now!'
I don't think the calibers are sticking. Even after a 200 mile run at high speed, the wheel / hubs are not even warm.
I am wondering if there is a problem with the hubs. A similar problem happended to a mate of mine on his Cossy. It was rust on the hubs preventing the discs from sitting perfectly square. Replacing the hubs fixed the problem.
The biggest problem is that Volvo UK claim they have nobody technical in the UK that can help me - even though this claim is still being handled under warrenty. If true this is simply not acceptable and I shall never be getting another Ford Focus (sorry Volvo).

You're not THE Roger Cook are you?
He's bang into his volvos- I read PPC magazine.
As far as warped discs go, it is down to heat not being dispersed properly. It's really common on Ford Capris as their discs are outboard, not inboard.
Something must be creating extra heat here. I'd suggest bearing wear/ lack of grease. Is it just one side or both?
Another possibility is a sticking caliper. Is the disc/ pad wear even?
Try buying and fitting discs from euro car parts and see how you get on.
Remember most main dealer technicians in the UK are spotty little oiks who only fit the new parts the computer tells them too. Get a Non-franchise Volvo specialist to look at the problem.
THIS WILL NOT INVALIDATE YOUR WARRANTY if the specialists are qualified (City and Guilds) and use genuine Volvo parts. There have been a few test cases of late on this subject.

CHECK THIS OUT...
The dealer has just called me to tell me that the reason the discs are warpping is because all 4 wheels are buckled !!
This is amazing as only I have driven the car from new and it has never hit anything - as can be seen from the perfect condition scuffless alloys.
It could be all the speed ramps that our local council are putting down, but I never hit them with undue speed.
I am looking forward to getting it back and sticking some miles on it. Last time they were sure that it was a worn steering rack and the discs were still shot again after 800 miles.
Will keep you informed .....

Unfortunately, some members fail to give an update. This can be very frustrating for all those who spend many hours finding solutions to problems. It also means that future members do not know if a particular solution worked.
