Good morning.
I'm coming up on the 105K service interval for my 2001 V70 2.4T and am getting pricing from a few garages.
One is including/reccommending a water pump replacement and coolant flush & fill with the service (I'm guessing its easier to get at when the timing belt is being replaced), but another says it's not necessary, as Volvo's water pumps are very well made and seldom leak or fail at this mileage.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd like to save a few (hundred) bucks, but not if I'm ignoring a vital step by not replacing the pump.
Thanks!

Water pumps are very strong but numerous members have seen them fail right before 200K miles so it's prudent to go ahead and change it while the timing belt is off- they are after all only about $50 (www.fcpgroton.com the Hepu pump is fine or for a bit more, the Nissins is actually OEM). The main thing here however, possibly even more than the belt itself is to change out the mechanical tensioner- it goes then the belt goes with it and very seldom will they last to the next belt change.

I agree with MIJ's assessment to replace the tensioner, but disagree about the water pump. This is probably because I recommend the TB change out at 90K instead of the 105. At that rate, the water pump falls into the 2nd TB change out. As MIJ mentioned, it's not that expensive and a change of the coolant is highly recommended so at this point it's probably the best way to go. Have you considered doing this yourself? Not that difficult, we'll be glad to help!

When I said 'good morning', I was telling you everything I know about changing timing belts! In addition to parts, I'd also need a tow truck and a big bag of speedy dry to sop up all the coolant on the ground.
I AM thinking about buying the OEM parts myself if the garage is OK with it. That way, I'm reasonably certain I'm not getting the Chech water pump I saw on eBay yesterday.
I did notice that there is a choice of a manual tensioner or an automatic tensioner. Is this based on the tranny type, or am I missing something?
Thanks for your help.

Auto tensioner and manual tensioner depends on your model year... yours is manual. It is a part that actually tensions the timing belt- has nothing to do with your tansmission.

MIJ, I need some more clarification on the auto vs manual for the 2001 model year.
FCP timing kit title indicates an Automatic tensioner for this year - is this a typo on their part?

It must be a typo because in the picture is a mechanical tensioner...the auto one (also called hydraulic) has a pin in it that must be compressed when you reuse it. The Mechanical one is not reusable- should be changed at ever TB change.
