why did you purchase your Volvo?
I'm just curious why people love Volvos despite the fact that they always need lots of repair work (even when new)!
I know there are stories out there of buyers who have drivin their Volvos for 20 years BUT they've spent a lot of those years repairing them. Tell me your reason, I am curious.

I bought mine for its unparalleled safety. It's really the safest car in the world. Also, because of its very high depreciation rate I was able to purchase it for a small percentage of its original cost. It has required some time and money to repair it and keep it up, but it's still a lot cheaper than a new car of comparable caliber. And my wife and I love the seats - most comfortable car seats we've ever sat in. Oh yeah, and the stereo is really good.

Comfortable seats. I remember back about 10 years ago test drving a Camry 3 times, I just could not get comfortable with the seats. I test drove/sat a few different Volvos, the only seats that felt great to me were the power leather seats on the GLT, so I bought it. And to this day those seats are still the best, I can drive 4 hours across the state and have no back fatigue.
I had a 99 S70 GLT. I drove it doing home health and I have to say, structurally it was very sound...it was the other little things going wrong that bugged me. I live 1.5 hours from the nearest dealership so just "dropping it off" was not always possible. I finally bought a "lot" of headlight bulbs and kept them in my trunk, and just ignored the check engine light most of the time. At the time, It was my main automobile which I depended on for my job duties. right now, I have a lexus but am looking at the C70convertible for just goofing around. Now if I can just get the dealer to tell me what kind of "accident' the Carfax report refers to, I'll be happy lol

Why did I choose Volvo?
I wanted a wagon, that limited my choices right there.
I didn't have much money, and used Volvos seem to me to be a good value compared to other brands.
I really like the 'feel' of driving Volvos, comfortable and sporty.
I like to work on my cars, at least the simpler stuff, and a mechanic friend said Volvo's are good for doing your own maintenance. (Especially with help from sites like Mathew's!)
They look great. Compare 10-year-old vehicles and to me the Volvos generally look best.
These cars do have a reputation for expensive repairs, but that is offset to some degree by the fact that they lend themselves to owner repair jobs for those that are so inclined.
The turbos are pretty cool too

First, safety, then looks, then longevity, then the "feel" of them and last of all because I can repair most everything myself.

I've only had the car for a week, so this is fresh on my mind. First off we wanted a third car with four doors, some cargo room, and mild towing. I'm a car guy, not an SUV guy. I still want to DRIVE a car not just have it drive me. We've always liked the look of Volvo wagons, but had never driven one. Our other cars are a '98 BMW 323is and a '95 Nissan 240sx. I love my Nissan, but it's really only has a novelty back seat and no cargo room. I autocross it now and then. I was beaten by a V70R at one event and it opened my eyes to how powerful these wagons were. I do some moderate repairs myself and it looks like this 850 is going to take up more of my garage time then either of the other vehicles. So far I'm happy with the car, I just need to spend a bit of time on stage 0 items first. This is also my first turbo car, so it will give me a chance to gain some experience working on them.

Because we are all gluttons for punishment.Tell me your reason, I am curious.
Actually they will run forever and they are easy to fix if you can do the work yourself. If you need to rely on a dealer or a shop to maintain the car, forget about it.

I have a 2001 S40 and I loved the look and feel of the car back when I bought it in 2001. All the other cars looked 'stupid' to me. I do a lot of highway driving and I wanted a safe car. I LOVE the turbo; it's great when you need it, and yet I still get great MPGs (32+ highway). Most new hybrids can't beat that and certainly not with the performance that the turbo offers. My mom had a Volvo and I guess it just got in my blood. As they say, volvo for life. I currently have 140K on the car and a few things are starting to get quirky, but as others have said, I'm finding my inner gearhead and I'm loving the fact I can fix a lot of the issues myself. Very empowering. But up to this point the car has been very reliable. I love her and she loves me and I can't imagine life without her.
Hi to you all! I recently acquire a 2000 S40, 1.6. Its in pretty good condition. I always like Volvos and I think they are attractive. My neighbour had one many years ago. it was a beauty and maybe thats where my love for volvo came from. Mine is a little lazy but it can run, if you know what i mean.....
