Is advice in Haynes manual good?

Post by bw77 »

I'm new to working on my car, so I recently bought the Haynes manual by Jex for the S70.

On the torque specs it says that all bolt threads should be oiled unless otherwise stated. Is this good advice?

On the motor mounts, it says new bolts should always be used. It that necessary?

On the timing belt change, it says to remove the crankshaft pulley for the serp belt. Other writeups say it's not necessary.

I wonder about the value of certain passages, like the part on removing the throttle body. They make it sound easy. Then I read the excellent instructions in the recent xemodex thread, and realized the Haynes instructions are worthless for my GLT.

Read it and then see what others are doing- some of what they say is over-kill but it still gets the job done.

It is around here - if you don't the threads will be rusted in place and it will take twice as much torque to get them loose.

This is what Volvo recommends, so I think Haynes just repeats it. I personally don't think it's necessary since the rubber mount will break before the bolts will fail.

I just use the Haynes manual as another resource in addition to VADIS and the great advice here on the forum. Take a look at all of them and choose which will work best for you.
