when car is driving around town , whenever i let off the gas(say,25-30mph) the car is supposed to coast freely, right?

mine doesn't. when i let off the gas i feel resistance from the transmission, and the rpm needle doesn't drop down properly. it stays stuck up at like 1700 even though i'm off the pedals.

isn't it supposed to fall down to like 1000 and allow the car to coast freely?
i think my car isn't properly going into the higher gears to allow this. whats up?

Can you feel the car up-shifting, or does it sound and feel like it's just staying in first gear when you are accelerating? The drag you feel is probably because you're braking with the engine and probably in a low gear. Sounds like a transmission problem. What mileage does the car have and when was the last time the transmission was serviced (fluid drain/flush)?

I can't offer too much, help on the matter unfortunately. Although I will note that when going at higher speeds, if you get off the pedal, it will not necessarily go straight down to idle speed. But it shouldn't be slowing you down like you describe.

Check your throttle wire under your throttle cover on the spring loaded reel...it could be that it's just getting stuck. When I let off of my gas pedal, my boost gauge automatically hits 20~22 Hg's and I have no resistance at all- even at low speeds, no matter what gear I've been in..... but last year, I took the wire off the reel and lubed it up. VADIS says to use Vaseline. I would clean it first and make sure the spring action is good as well.

Does it happen once the car is warmed up? Mine shifts higher, and doesn't let the transmission upshift at low speeds until the engine is about halfway warmed up on the dash. I assume it's just to help the car warm up faster in the winter by keeping revs higher...I wonder if the temperature sensor of the thermostat has anything to do with yours, or if the transmission has a similar sensor to allow it to warm up that has gone bad.
