Towing a Volvo 740

Post by chapwest »

I have a Volvo 740 turbo, 1991 with manual transmission. Been trying to find out if it can be flat towed behind a motorhome. The manual is silent on this so I assume this model has not been factory tested. Any info or hints on where to get info?

I don't know about your car specifically, but in general cars with manual transmissions are towable. It's the automatics that have problems because the bearings are lubricated by the internal oil pump, which isn't running when the engine is off. I tow my PT Cruiser (it's a manual) behind my motorhome 4 down with no problems. After looking at all the options I decided it was the easiest way - no dolly or trailer to mess with. You have to be aware that you cannot back up with your car hooked to your motorhome 4 down, though, because it puts too much stress on the suspension components and something will break. With a trailer (all 4 car wheels off the ground) you would be able to back up. Let me know if you have any more questions about it.
