Removing carpet?

Post by livelychick »

Hi--
My 2005 S40 had a disconnected sunroof drain hose; after going through a couple of car washes, there was standing water under my driver's side seat. The hose has been fixed, but the insulation under the carpet is still wet. I've done everything I could to get it dried out, but it's not. How can I remove the carpet to let it dry out? It's been several weeks...

Thanks!

I think it probably would be more work than it would be worth. I would set up a box fan in the car and open all the windows. Let the fan run on high. If you have a heat source like a hair dryer that would help. Just set it on low and let it run (place it on something non-combustible like a cookie sheet or frying pan). You can periodically take a towel and compress it into different areas of the carpet to soak up some of the water and draw it to the surface so it will evaporate faster. I did this once on one of my cars (not the Volvo) and it took about 3 days to dry it out.

I would use a heat lamp with a fan or if you have a nice sunny day, do it outside so that the heat of the sun helps dry it out... you want to get it thoroughly dry so as not to have mold and mildew growing under your carpet.

Thanks for the tips, but I've done all that. The carpet is dry, it's the foam insulation underneath. It's now been wet for over 6 weeks.

In that case, as much as it is a pain, you'll probably want to do what we were trying to get you to avoid all along- peel back the carpet to the point where it's dry and do the same thing you've been doing with the wet foam section exposed.

Well I looked all through VADIS and couldn't find any directions for removing the carpet. I guess they don't expect anyone to ever do it.

Thanks for looking, though. I guess I'll just start taking things apart and seeing where that takes me!
